Over 130,000 cases of diabetes now linked to soda consumption, HFCS

(NaturalNews) For years, advocates of natural health have been hammering away at the message that soda causes diabetes and obesity. The soda industry, meanwhile, has remained in denial mode, mirroring the ridiculous position of the tobacco industry that “nicotine is not addictive.” Soda doesn’t cause diabetes, the industry claims, and it’s perfectly safe to consume in essentially unlimited quantities.

The Corn Refiners Association has joined the denial with its own spin campaign that seeks to convince people High-Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) is totally natural and completely harmless. HFCS is, of course, the primary sweetener used in sodas and soft drinks.

Now comes new research presented at the American Heart Association’s Cardiovascular Disease Epidemiology and Prevention annual conference in San Francisco. This new research reveals that over the last decade, soda consumption has conservatively caused:

• 130,000 new cases of diabetes
• 14,000 new cases of heart disease
• 50,000 more “life years” with heart disease over the last decade

“The finding suggests that any kind of policy that reduces consumption might have a dramatic health benefit,” said senior study author Dr. Kirsten Bibbins-Domingo (associate professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco).

The American Beverage Association, meanwhile, says this study hasn’t been published in a peer-reviewed medical journal yet and therefore it doesn’t count. Soda consumption doesn’t cause diabetes or heart disease, they claim, because “…both heart disease and diabetes are complex conditions with no single cause and no single solution.”

It’s silly logic, of course: Diabetes obviously has a cause. It’s not some spontaneous disease that appears out of nowhere. And when you go looking for the cause, you obviously have to look at dietary factors since diabetes is a disease related to the consumption and metabolism of dietary sugars. Once you do that, sodas immediately raise a red flag because they’re liquid sugar in a highly-concentrated form that does not exist naturally in nature.

HFCS doesn’t grow on trees, in other words. Nature provides sugars locked into insoluble fibers that slow digestion and lower the effective glycemic index of sugars that are consumed. In nature, sugars are always combined with minerals, too, and many of those minerals help prevent diabetes and heart disease. But High-Fructose Corn Syrup is stripped of virtually all those minerals. It contains no fiber and no healing phytonutrients that you might encounter in plants. As a result, HFCS — sometimes dubbed “liquid Satan” — might be called a dietary poison that causes disease while contributing to nutritional deficiencies that accelerate disease.

Bone loss

Interestingly, this new study did not look at loss of bone density, which is another side effect of drinking soda. Due to the extremely high acidity of the HFCS sweetener combined with the phosphoric acid used in sodas, people who drink sodas often lose bone minerals and end up being diagnosed with osteoporosis (even at a relatively young age).

Other people end up with kidney stones due to all these minerals passing through the kidneys and contributing to the built up of mineral deposits there. Long-term soda consumers may even suffer from pancreatic cancer due to the extreme stress placed on the pancreas following the consumption of liquid sugars.

In all, soda consumption is linked to at least six serious diseases:

#1) Diabetes
#2) Obesity
#3) Heart disease
#4) Cancer
#5) Osteoporosis
#6) Kidney stones

That’s why taxing sodas is more than merely a way to raise money through soda sales; it’s also a way to dramatically reduce the cost of treating these diseases. It’s no surprise that several U.S. states are now starting to seriously consider slapping new taxes on sodas and other “junk” beverages.

That’s not the way I would prefer to see the situation handled, actually. The better option, in my view, would be to ban all soda advertising by effectively stripping Free Speech rights from corporations. Such rights belong only to individuals, not multi-billion-dollar corporations. Corporations whose products physically harm the health of the population at large should not be allowed to openly advertise and promote those products to the public. They can still sell them, they just can’t advertise them.

Seven steps to help you lose weight without a flare-up.
Gout can be painful. It’s even likely that you avoid weight loss because of concerns over triggering a flare-up. Not to worry—by following these easy weight-loss tips, you can safely lose weight and reduce risk of gout attacks.

Why lose weight at all? Apart from other health gains, losing weight is one of the best things you can do for gout. According to the latest nutritional research, maintaining a healthy body weight helps to decrease uric acid levels, which is the underlying cause of gouty arthritis.
Gout Tip1: Choose Dairy over Meats and Seafood

If you have gout, then you are no doubt already aware that gout is linked to eating a diet rich in animal foods high in purines such as organ meats and some seafood. Foods with moderate levels of purine are also muscle meats, whole-grain breads and cereals, poultry, dried beans and peas, asparagus, spinach and mushrooms. Avoiding these foods can help you lower risk of gout attacks.

What you may not know islow-fat dairy products can help you get the protein you need without the gout. Results from a study led by Hyon K. Choi, MD, of Harvard, reported in the New England Journal of Medicine, showed that people who consumed a diet containing low-fat dairy products had a reducedrisk of gout.

Replace one of your meals with a low-calorie complete meal replacement with whey and casein protein such as Isagenix IsaLean Shake. f you want to take advantage of other sources of proteins, you can also try hemp seed (as in IsaCrunch™) and nuts such as almonds or walnuts.

Gout Tip 2: Lose Weight Gradually

Losing weight too quickly can potentially trigger a gout attack. If you’re overweight and susceptible to gout you should only lose weight at a rate of 1 pound a week.

To lose just enough but not too much, you should avoid fasting and only drop your caloric intake by 500calories weekly. As you gradually lose weight, you’ll soon see gout symptoms slowly disappear.

As you lower calories, agreat nutritional system to use for gradual weight loss is the Isagenix Total Health and Wellness System. (For nutritional cleansing, you should avoid Deep Cleansing, but Daily Cleansing is still OK.)

Gout Tip 3:Cut the Alcohol, Especially Beer

You know alcohol can trigger gout, but beer is especially known for triggering an attack. If you’re looking to enjoy a bit of social drinking, be sure to choose red wine instead of beer and limit your intake to not more than 5 oz daily. Keep in mind that alcohol interferes with elimination of uric acid in the blood.

Gout Tip 4: Skip the Sugary Drinks and Desserts

Sugar-sweetened foods such as rich desserts and soft drinksc can boost risk of a gout attack. To help avoidgout (and improve weight loss), choose low-sugar alternatives such as green tea, IsaFruits or Isagenix Greens!as well as complex carbohydrates and snacks rich in fibersuch as SlimCakes.

Gout Tip 5: Drink Plenty of Water

By drinking plenty of water daily, you help to remove uric acid from your body. In fact, studies show that consuming two to three quarts daily will even help prevent the formation of uric acid kidney stones.

If you dislike the flavor of your drinking water, be sure to refresh it with IsaWATER™ Alkalized Concentrate, whichhelps make your water taste better and is healthier. In fact, just drinking purified, healthy water—instead of sugary drinks—will make a world of difference in your results.

Gout Tip 6: Get Extra Fish Oil Via Supplements

Along with its heart health benefits, the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil mayhelpwithgout symptoms. According to Dr. Choi, fish oilnaturally reduces inflammation. But because you don’t want to be eating any seafood, taking a good quality, purified fish oil supplement such as IsaOmega Supreme™is the way to go.

Gout Tip 7: Get Extra Vitamin C

By boosting intake of vitamin C, you may find yourself with lower risk of gout. According to Dr. Choi’s research, men who had taken vitamin C in amounts of 1,500 mg or more per day had at least a 45 percent lower risk of gout in comparison with men with an intake of less than 250 mg per day.

When taking high doses of vitamin C, be sure to pick a supplement that is gentle on your stomach likeIsagenix C-Lyte®.

Goodbye Gout, Hello Health

As you take advantage of each of these tips and gradually lose weight, you’ll soon notice gout symptoms slowly disappear. In fact, you’ll notice more than that. You’ll also notice you’ll look better, feel better and be healthier.

The drug in question is a combination of the narcotic painkiller dextropropoxyphene (in the opioid family) with the over-the-counter painkiller acetaminophen, also known as paracetamol or Tylenol. In the United Kingdom, the drug was marketed as co-proxamol, but it is also known as Darvon with APAP, Capadex, Di-Antalvic, Di-Gesic and Lentogesic.

In 2005, the British Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) decided to remove co-proxamol from the market after statistics emerged suggesting that the drug was particularly dangerous, causing between 300 and 400 self-poisoning deaths every year. Approximately 80 percent of these deaths were intentional suicides.

The agency instructed doctors to phase out use of the drug by 2007, and over that period prescriptions of co-proxamol fell 59 percent and deaths from the drug fell 62 percent. This translated into 295 fewer suicides and 54 fewer accidental overdoses from the drug. Significantly, there was no concurrent increase in suicides or accidental overdoses from other painkillers, even though use of those drugs increased correspondingly.

“This marked reduction in suicides and accidental poisonings involving co-proxamol during this period, with no evidence of an increase in deaths involving other analgesics, suggests the initiative has been effective,” lead researcher Keith Hawton said.

“Co-proxamol is extremely dangerous in overdose — only a small overdose can be fatal, and death can occur very rapidly — before medical attention can be sought,” an MHRA spokesperson said. “[In addition,] there is no robust evidence that co-proxamol offers any advantage over paracetamol or ibuprofen at normal doses.”

The FDA is currently considering whether to withdraw the drug from the U.S. market.

If you are like most people, you probably haven’t spent much time thinking about how much bromine you’re absorbing from your car upholstery or your Mountain Dew. But bromine toxicity is a definite danger from some surprising sources, and it can wreak havoc on your health.

Bromines All Around You

Bromines are common endocrine disruptors, and are part of the halide family, a group of elements that includes fluorine, chlorine and iodine. What makes it so dangerous is that it competes for the same receptors that are used to capture iodine.

If you are exposed to a lot of bromine, your body will not hold on to the iodine that it needs. And iodine affects every tissue in your body — not just your thyroid.

You are already exposed to far too much chlorine and bromine. Bromine can be found in a number of places in your everyday world, including:

•Pesticides (specifically methyl bromide, used mainly on strawberries, predominantly in California)

•Plastics, like those used to make computers

•Bakery goods and some flours often contain a “dough conditioner” called potassium bromate

•Soft drinks (including Mountain Dew, Gatorade, Sun Drop, Squirt, Fresca and other citrus-flavored sodas), in the form of brominated vegetable oils (BVOs)

•Medications such as Atrovent Inhaler, Atrovent Nasal Spray, Pro-Banthine (for ulcers), and anesthesia agents

•Fire retardants (common one is polybromo diphenyl ethers or PBDEs) used in fabrics, carpets, upholstery, and mattresses

•Bromine-based hot tub and swimming pool treatments

According to van Leeuwen, who has extensively studied the effects of sodium bromide on thyroid function:

“Although the bromide ion is widely distributed in nature, the main route of exposure in humans stems from bromide residues in food commodities as a result of the abundant use of bromide-containing pesticides, like methylbromide and ethylene dibromide, for soil fumigation in intensive horticulture and for postharvest treatment.”

One clinical consequence of overexposure to bromine is suppression of your thyroid, leading to hypothyroidism, which will be discussed shortly. Another is bromide toxicity.

Bromine — The Bully of the Halide Group

When you ingest or absorb bromine, it displaces iodine, and this iodine deficiency leads to an increased risk for cancer of the breast, thyroid gland, ovary and prostate — cancers that we see at alarmingly high rates today. This phenomenon is significant enough to have been given its own name — the Bromide Dominance Theory.

Aside from its effects on your endocrine glands, bromine is toxic in and of itself. Bromide builds up in your central nervous system and results in many problems. It is a central nervous system depressant and can trigger a number of psychological symptoms such as acute paranoia and other psychotic symptoms.

In fact, in an audio interview, physician Jorge Flechas reported that, between 1920 and 1960, at least 20 percent of all hospital admissions for “acute paranoid schizophrenia” were a result of ingesting bromine-containing products.

In addition to psychiatric problems, bromine toxicity can manifest as the following:

•Skin rashes and severe acne

•Loss of appetite and abdominal pain

•Fatigue

•Metallic taste

•Cardiac arrhythmias

Baby Boomers might recall a popular product from the 1950s called Bromo-Seltzer. These effervescent granules, developed by the Emerson Drug Company of Baltimore, were used to treat heartburn, upset stomach, indigestion, headaches and hangovers.

Bromo-Selzer’s original formula contained 3.2 mEq/teaspoon of sodium bromide — hence the name. The sedative effect probably explained its popularity as a hangover remedy. Bromides were withdrawn from the American market in 1975 due to their toxicity.

Bromo-Selzer is still on the market, but no longer contains bromide.

Bromines in Your Bread Box: Potassium Bromate

The ban on bromines have not prevented them from sneaking into your foods and personal care products.

You probably are not aware of this, but nearly every time you eat bread in a restaurant or consume a hamburger or hotdog bun you are consuming bromide, as it is commonly used in flours.

The use of potassium bromate as an additive to commercial breads and baked goods has been a huge contributor to bromide overload in Western cultures.

Bromated flour is “enriched” with potassium bromate. Commercial baking companies claim it makes the dough more elastic and better able to stand up to bread hooks. However, Pepperidge Farm and other successful companies manage to use only unbromated flour without any of these so-called “structural problems.”

Potassium bromate is also found in some toothpastes and mouthwashes, where it’s added as an antiseptic and astringent. It has been found to cause bleeding and inflammation of gums in people using these products.

Sodium Bromate and BMOs

Mountain Dew, one of the worst beverages you can drink, uses brominated vegetable oil as an emulsifier. Not only that, it contains high fructose corn syrup, sodium benzoate, more than 55 mg of caffeine per 12 ounce can, and Yellow Dye #5 (tartrazine, which has been banned in Norway, Austria and Germany.)

A weapon of mass destruction — in a can.

Even drinking water can be a source of bromide. When drinking water containing bromide is exposed to ozone, bromate ions are formed, which are powerful oxidizing agents. Such was the case in 2004 when Coca Cola Company had to recall Dasani bottled water.

Sodium bromate can also be found in personal care products such as permanent waves, hair dyes, and textile dyes. Benzalkonium is used as a preservative in some cosmetics.

Finally, bromine and chlorine were the most common toxic elements reportedly found in automobiles, according to the blog of David Brownstein, MD (March 2007). They showed up in the seats, armrests, door trim, shift knobs and other areas of the car.

Think about how much time you spend enclosed in your outgassing Chevy… windows up with no air circulation.

The United States is quite behind in putting an end to the egregious practice of allowing bromine chemicals in your foods. In 1990, the United Kingdom banned bromate in bread. In 1994, Canada did the same. Brazil recently outlawed bromide in flour products.

What’s taking us so long? Another case of our government protecting big industry — instead of protecting you.

Iodine Levels and Cancer Risk

Iodine levels have significantly dropped due to bromine exposure; declining consumption of iodized salt, eggs, fish, and sea vegetables; and soil depletion. In the U.S. population, there was a 50 percent reduction in urinary iodine excretion between 1970 and 1990.

What’s this doing to our country’s health?

The Japanese consume 89 times more iodine than Americans due to their daily consumption of sea vegetables, and they have reduced rates of many chronic diseases, including the lowest rates of cancer in the world. The RDA for iodine in the U.S. is a meager 150 mcg/day, which pales in comparison with the average daily intake of 13800 mcg/day for the Japanese.

There is a large body of evidence suggesting that low cancer rates in Japan are a result of their substantially higher iodine levels. Iodine has documented antioxidant and anti-proliferative properties.

A strong case can be made that your iodine RDA should be closer to what the Japanese consume daily, if breast cancer rates are any indication. Low iodine can lead to fibrocystic breast disease in women (density, lumps and bumps), hyperplasia, and atypical mammary tissue. Such fibrocystic changes in breast tissue have been shown to reverse in the presence of iodine supplementation after 3-4 months.

If you are interested in being tested for iodine deficiency, the urine iodine challenge test is the best way to assess your iodine level.

Bromine and Your Thyroid
Adding to the negative health effects of bromine, the damage to your thyroid health deserves special mention.

As stated in the first part of this article, bromine exposure depletes your body’s iodine by competing with iodine receptors. Iodine is crucial for thyroid function. Without iodine, your thyroid gland would be completely unable to produce thyroid hormone.

Even the names of the different forms of thyroid hormone reflect the number of iodine molecules attached — T4 has four attached iodine molecules, and T3 (the biologically active form of the hormone) has three–showing what an important part iodine plays in thyroid biochemistry.

Hypothyroidism is far more prevalent than once thought in the U.S. The latest estimates are that 13 million Americans have hypothyroidism, but the actual numbers are probably higher. Some experts claim that 10 to40 percent of Americans have suboptimal thyroid function.

Many of these folks may actually have nothing wrong with their thyroid gland at all — they may just be suffering from iodine deficiency.

Seven Tips for Avoiding Bromine and Optimizing Iodine

Trying to avoid bromine is like trying to avoid air pollution — all you can do is minimize your exposure. That said, here are a few things you can do to minimize your risk:

1. Eat organic as often as possible. Wash all produce thoroughly. This will minimize your pesticide exposure.

2. Avoid eating or drinking from (or storing food and water in) plastic containers. Use glass and safe ceramic vessels.

3. Look for organic whole-grain breads and flour. Grind you own grain, if possible. Look for the “no bromine” or “bromine-free” label on commercial baked goods.

4. Avoid sodas. Drink natural, filtered water instead.

5. If you own a hot tub, look into an ozone purification system. Such systems make it possible to keep the water clean with minimal chemical treatments.

6. Look for personal care products that are as chemical-free as possible. Remember — anything going on you, goes in you.

7. When in a car or a building, open windows as often as possible, preferably on opposing sides of the space for cross ventilation. Utilize fans to circulate the air. Chemical pollutants are much higher inside buildings (and cars) than outside.

Avoid Unfermented Soy
Another major contributor to thyroid dysfunction that I did not discuss above is unfermented soy. Soy isoflavones can wreak havoc on your thyroid.

Kaayla Daniel’s groundbreaking book, The Whole Soy Story: The Dark Side of America’s Favorite Health Food is a powerful exposé that reveals the truth about the soy myths that have infiltrated our culture.

It’s ironic that soy has become so accepted as a health food when, as Dr. Daniel states, thousands of studies link soy to malnutrition, digestive distress, immune-system breakdown, thyroid- and hormonal dysfunction, cognitive decline, reproductive disorders and infertility–even cancer and heart disease.

So if you want to keep your thyroid healthy, you’ll definitely want to avoid unfermented soy products of all kinds, including soy milk.

John McCain no longer supports a bill he introduced to significantly tighten regulatory requirements for dietary supplements.

McCain offered the Dietary Supplement Safety Act of 2010, S. 3002, in February. The Arizona Republican will now collaborate with Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, on revised legislation that allegedly provides for transparency and safety within the supplement industry but without the intensive regulatory intervention proposed in S. 3002. No timeline is set for introduction of a new bill.

Hatch thanks McCain for withdrawing his support of the original legislation in a March 4 letter.

“I’m counting on you to work with me to make sure this important industry does not fall prey to over-regulatory regimes and mounds of costly government bureaucracy,” Hatch writes.

It seemed only a matter of time before Hatch, an author of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act and a vocal industry booster, would speak out against McCain’s bill. S. 3002 targeted products containing steroids and other illegal substances, but was viewed as having potentially devastating effects on the supplement industry as a whole.

S. 3002 would have authorized FDA to create a list of “accepted” supplement ingredients, essentially eliminating the new dietary ingredient notification regime established by DSHEA. Other provisions would have required supplement firms to report all adverse events to FDA and would have mandated annual facility and product registration with the agency.

Women who take Strategic Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressants during pregnancy are twice as likely to give birth prematurely as women who do not take the drugs, according to a study published in the Archives of Pediatric & Adolescent Medicine and funded by the Danish Medical Research Council.

Many of the most popular depressants are SSRIs, such as Prozac.

Researchers compared rates of premature birth between different women receiving prenatal care at the same hospital in Aarhus, Denmark. They compared women who were depressed and taking SSRIs with those who were depressed and not on any drugs, as well as those who did not suffer from depression.

Women who took SSRIs while pregnant were two times as likely to give premature birth as those who did not take the drugs. On average, they gave birth four to five days earlier (relative to their due dates) than women who did not take the drugs.

The researchers also found that the risk of an infant needing intensive care immediately after birth was significantly increased by SSRI use during pregnancy. While only 7 percent of babies born to non-depressed mothers needed intensive care, along with only 9 percent of those born to depressed mothers who were not taking drugs, 16 percent of babies born to women who had used SSRIs while pregnant required treatment in an intensive care unit.

Babies born to SSRI-using mothers also appeared less healthy than other babies, the researchers said, based on measures including skin color, activity level after birth, pulse, breathing and response to external stimuli.

Previous studies have confirmed that SSRIs can cross the placental barrier into the fetal bloodstream, and that infants born to women who used the drugs during pregnancy can suffer from withdrawal symptoms.

Health professionals recommend that women who are taking SSRIs and are pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant speak with a doctor about their options, rather than stopping treatment abruptly. Side effects of antidepressant withdrawal can be severe.

(NaturalNews) “This is the Voice of Doom speaking! Special bulletin! Flash! The sky is falling! A piece of it just hit you on the head! Now be calm. Don’t get panicky. Run for your life!” That’s a quote from the tricky con artist Foxy Loxy in the 1943 animated version of “Chicken Little”, the classic children’s story. But it has striking similarities to some breaking medical news.

According to a study by University of Chicago researchers published in the December issue of the journal Diabetes Care, over the next 25 years, the number of people in the US with diabetes will almost double, soaring from the 23.7 million who have the disease today to 44.1 million in 2034. What’s more, spending on diabetes will virtually triple, rising from $113 billion to $336 billion, even if there’s no further increase in the already unhealthy prevalence of obesity in this country.

Sound scary? The report gets worse. There will be disastrous economic consequences because of the huge burden the diabetes epidemic will place on the healthcare industry, too, the researchers predicted. The number of those with diabetes covered by Medicare will jump from 8.2 million to 14.6 million and Medicare spending on diabetes will increase from $45 billion to $171 billion.

“The public policy implications are enormous,” said co-author Michael O’Grady, PhD, senior fellow at the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago, in a statement to the media. “This a serious challenge to Medicare and every other health plan in the country.”

How to change the future

The projections are alarming but the facts also show that this projected dire future can be changed. The rise in diabetes is expected to be primarily due to the type 2 variety. And there’s good news — type 2 diabetes is almost always preventable with natural, common sense health strategies that are not difficult and primarily involve eating healthy diets containing a lot of vegetables and fruits and giving up sedentary lifestyles.

The challenge is for people to understand they can — and must — take control of their own health and prevent type 2 diabetes. As Dr. O’Grady stated: “The cost of doing nothing is the significant increase in the pain and suffering of America’s population and a financial burden that will threaten the financial viability of public and private insurers alike.”

“If we don’t change our diet and exercise habits or find new, more effective and less expensive ways to prevent and treat diabetes, we will find ourselves in a lot of trouble as a population,” the study’s lead author Elbert Huang, MD, assistant professor of medicine at the University of Chicago, said in the press statement.

NaturalNews has consistently reported on a host of evidence that type 2 diabetes can be prevented and treated naturally by weight control, regular exercise and effective, inexpensive and natural nutrition therapies. Here are some examples:

Cinnamon helps regulate blood sugar and may prevent diabetes (http://www.naturalnews.com/027168_c…).

Specific Chinese herbal remedies have been found to normalize blood sugar (http://www.naturalnews.com/027400_d…).

The trace mineral chromium improves insulin sensitivity, reducing the risk of diabetes (http://www.naturalnews.com/027398_c…).

The spice tumeric has anti-diabetes properties (http://www.naturalnews.com/024644.html).

Eating legumes can slash diabetes risk by 40% (http://www.naturalnews.com/023831.html).

Adding nuts to the Mediterranean style of eating treats the pre-diabetic condition known as metabolic syndrome (http://www.naturalnews.com/025098_n…).

Smith’s Genetic Roulette: The Documented Health Risks of Genetically Engineered Foods “Swapping genes between organisms can produce unknown toxic effects and allergies that are most likely to affect children.” —Vyvyan Howard, expert in infant toxico-pathology at Liverpool University Hospital, United Kingdom

Changes in nutrition have a greater impact on the structure and functioning of young, fast-growing bodies. More of the food is converted to build organs and tissues, whereas adults convert more to energy and store this as fat.

The UK Royal Society said that genetic modification “could lead to unpredicted harmful changes in the nutritional state of foods” and recommended that potential health effects of GM foods be rigorously researched before being fed to pregnant or breast-feeding women and babies.” Epidemiologist Eric Brunner said that “small changes to the nutritional content might have effects on infant bowel function.”

Children are more susceptible to problems

Children are three to four times more prone to allergies than adults and “are at highest risk of death from food allergy.” Infants below two years old have the highest incidence of reactions, especially to new allergens encountered in the diet. Even tiny amounts of allergens can sometimes cause reactions. One reason for this sensitivity, according to the EPA, is that “An immature gut or permeable mucosal epithelium is more likely to allow a higher degree of macromolecular transport and access to the immune system than the intact barrier of a normal mature gut. . . . The immune system must also be of sufficient maturity. . . . Both systems appear to be functioning optimally by age three to five.”

According to the Royal Society of Canada, “The potentially widespread use of GM food products as food additives and staple foods, including use in baby foods, may lead to earlier introduction of these novel proteins to susceptible infants either directly or via the presence of the maternally ingested proteins in breast milk.”

The UK Royal Society suggested that “post-marketing surveillance should be part of the overall safety strategy for allergies, especially of high-risk groups such as infants,” but acknowledged that it is not clear “whether such monitoring is feasible for GM food.”

Children can react to much smaller doses of toxins than adults. Exposure to hormones or endocrine disruptors may also severely affect normal development. And children who are prone to infections may be severely impacted if antibiotics lose their effectiveness due to antibiotic-resistant genes in GM food and the overuse of antibiotics in rbGH treated cows.

Children have a high exposure to GMOs

Children consume a large amount of products that may be genetically engineered. They eat a higher percentage of corn in their diet compared to adults, and allergic children often rely on corn as a source of protein. Mothers using cornstarch as a talc substitute on their children’s skin might also expose them via inhalation. Infants are sometimes reared on soy infant formula. The Royal Society wrote, “Infant formulas, in particular, are “consumed as a single food over extended periods of time by those who are especially vulnerable” and “should be investigated most rigorously.” Among the potential side effects are changes in soy’s natural estrogen mimickers, which may influence sexual development.

Children consume a disproportionately large amount of milk. In the United States and elsewhere, dairy products may come from cows treated with the genetically engineered bovine growth hormone (rbGH). The milk contains increased amounts of hormones and antibiotics and an altered nutritional content (see section 7.1). According to a discussion paper on the public health implications of rbGH, published in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine, an “infant would be exposed to a dose of IGF-1, which was 12.5 times the recommended minimum.” Samuel Epstein, chairman of the Cancer Prevention Coalition and an expert on the health effects of rbGH, says that risks of high exposure to IGF-1 are “of particular concern . . . to infants and children in view of their high susceptibility to cancer-causing products and chemicals.” He also suggests that regular exposure might promote “premature growth stimulation in infants, gynecomastia [development of abnormally large breasts on males] in young children.”

Safety assessments ignore children

An FAO/WHO task force on GM food said that “Attention should be paid to the particular physiological characteristics and metabolic requirements of specific population subgroups, such as infants [and] children.” In practice, GM safety assessments ignore them. In fact, industry funded studies often use mature animals instead of the more sensitive young ones, in order to mask results (see part 3).

Biologist David Schubert warns, “Since children are the most likely to be adversely effected by toxins and other dietary problems, if the GM food is given to them without proper testing, they will be the experimental animals. If there are problems, we will probably never know because the cause will not be traceable and many diseases take a very long time to develop.”

– Pat Houde, equine feed lot manager, regarding Premarin foals and mares

The Int’l Fund for Horses is working to end the use of medications derived from conjugated equine estrogen (CEE), or pregnant mare’s urine.

Mares, foals and women are all at risk. The mares and foals cannot speak for themselves, but women can, and should, for the horses and for themselves.

We ask that women please prepare the following letter and send it to their physicians.

If you are a woman not experiencing menopausal symptoms, please edit the letter to fit your circumstances (omit the last paragraph and end with a thank you).

Both men and women should share this with the horse lovers and women in their lives.

Thank you for getting involved!

Dear Dr. [Insert Name]

Re: Hormone Replacement Therapy Drugs for Treatment of Menopausal Symptoms
Premarin®, Prempro® and Aprela (awaiting approval)

Please Refuse to Prescribe these Drugs

As a concerned and knowledgeable patient regarding the use of the conjugated equine estrogen produced drugs Premarin® and Prempro®, I encourage you to stop prescribing these medications for relief of menopausal symptoms. Premarin® and other such HRT compounds are derived from the high concentration of estrogen in pregnant mare’s urine (PMU). Not only is the collection practice inhumane but the risks imparted by these drugs to unsuspecting women are objectionable and unnecessary. Many believe that the risks far outweigh any benefits offered given that these particular medications are recognized by the United Nations as potent carcinogens.

The Horses

Life for PMU mares is merciless; repeatedly impregnated for up to as many as 20 years, they spend 6 months of their 11-month pregnancy confined to stalls so small they have difficulty turning around or lying down. During this time, they are permanently connected to cumbersome rubber urine collection bags that chafe their flanks, cause infections and severely limit movement. Water intake is routinely restricted to concentrate the amount of estrogen in their urine causing life-threatening renal and liver problems. Equally disturbing is the fate of the foals – the “by-products” of the industry. Most are sold at auction to “kill buyers” and ultimately end up at the slaughterhouse.

The Women

Nationwide studies (e.g. NIH’s Women’s Health Initiative) have been published that clearly corroborate the link between HRT, cancer, heart disease, stroke and dementia. Women who take these drugs face significantly increased risks of: invasive breast cancer (26%), heart disease (29%), strokes (41%), blood clots to the lungs and legs (50%), ovarian cancer (60%), impaired cognitive function, dementia and Alzheimer’s, asthma, lung cancer, malignant melanoma, and reduced insulin resistance, among others. Most importantly, when these medications are stopped, a woman’s risk returns to the same level as those who have never used these therapies.

The Culprits

Noteworthy are the on-going lawsuits against Wyeth (now a Division of Pfizer), the manufacturer of the Premarin® family of drugs. Juries and Judges alike have shown that Wyeth failed to adequately warn consumers about the risks associated with these drugs and that they purposefully hid the risk of breast cancer and other diseases. Moreover, evidence has confirmed that Wyeth employed ghostwriters to write medical reports related to HRT and paid physicians to sign off as the authors. Not only did the articles overstate the benefits of HRT, but they diminished the serious risks associated with the drugs.

The Alternatives

I believe there are safer and more humane alternatives available. However, as always, before trying these alternative remedies, I would like to discuss these options with you.

Although low, compared to the current unemployment rate in the U.S., it is estimated that about 25% of the population is underemployed. Unemployment and underemployment has become a huge issue for Mexico.

Unfortunately for the Mexican people, the government has not been able to create sufficient jobs in the last ten years. Although more and more Mexicans continue to pursue higher education, there are not enough positions open to fill. This is why many leave the country to pursue better opportunities elsewhere.

How can Isagenix help this situation? And how can you, as an Associate, benefit from our expansion into Mexico? The opportunities that are available for both you and the Mexican people are great. Isagenix has the opportunity to enter a country where many are looking to better their financial situation. What better way than to improve the lives of many, not-only financially, but also health-wise.

Isagenix will become that source of income that many Mexicans are looking and hoping for. By brining in business opportunities to many people, Isagenix will grow exponentially. This continued growth only means more growth for your business.
