Obesity: The “Calling Card” For Health Nightmares
Our obesity problem in the US alone has truly distinguished us in the world. Unfortunately, Americans have become recognizable by the waistline instead of by the freedoms we possess. We have become prisoners to food addictions and health problems. We are under attack by the food we eat.
The CDC (Center For Disease Control) recently released new data revealing increases in average food consumption with less physical activity. Portion sizes have increased and, inspite of a down economy, folks are eating more meals out of the house.
The real tragedy is with younger folks. We try to address adults about the serious consequences of being overweight, yet ignore the fact that these issues start much earlier. A recent NHANES survey showed that 80 percent of overweight children 10 to 15 years old will be obese as adults. Kids are evidencing risk factors related to cardiovascular disease.
Statistics also show severe obesity in adults who were already overweight prior to age eight. This threshold is receding with the discovery of new data. In a comparison study using data from 1976 to 1980 and 2003 to 2006, children obesity has dramatically increase. For 12 to 19 year olds, percentages went from 5% to 17.6%. Six to 11 year olds went from 6.5% to 17%.
The most startling change came from the 2 to 5 year olds which increased from 5% to 12.6%. What in the world causes a 2 to 5 year old to have obesity challenges? Well, some say that it is due to the onslaught of electronic games, more channels on TV, and possibly related to poor sleep patterns and sleep deprivation.
While all these certainly can contribute to childhood obesity, the challenges for children and their weight are the direct result of malnutrition…malnutrition as a result of an availability of an overabundance of processed, toxin-ladened “food.”
All the ailments listed above are directly related to being overweight. Lowering your weight reduces the risks of developing disease…especially the leading killers such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.
