Researchers at the German Institute of Human Nutrition in Nuthetal, Germany, reached this conclusion after following 19,357 people between the ages of 35 and 65 for at least ten years and studying the research participants’ chocolate consumption. The results? Research subjects who ate the most chocolate (on average, about 7.5 grams a day) had lower blood pressure. What’s more, the risk of chocolate lovers having a heart attack or stroke was dramatically lowered, too.

“People who ate the most amount of chocolate were at a 39% lower risk than those with the lowest chocolate intakes,” Dr Brian Buijsse, the nutritional epidemiologist who led the research, said in a press statement. “To put it in terms of absolute risk, if people in the group eating the least amount of chocolate (of whom 219 per 10,000 had a heart attack or stroke) increased their chocolate intake by six grams a day, 85 fewer heart attacks and strokes per 10,000 people could be expected to occur over a period of about ten years.”

So what is it about chocolate that has such as profound impact on cardiovascular health? At first glance, chocolate’s documented ability to lower blood pressure would appear to be the key. And, in fact, the scientists found lowered blood pressure due to chocolate consumption at the start of the study did explain for about 12% of the reduced risk of heart attacks and strokes. But they think something else is going on in the bodies of regular chocolate eaters, too, that accounts for the enormous drop in their heart attack risk.

One possibility, the researchers noted, is that phytochemicals known as flavanols that are abundant in cocoa (the main ingredient in chocolate) somehow protect the cardiovascular system. Because dark chocolate contains more cocoa — and, therefore, more flavanols — that would explain why dark chocolate has more health benefits than other varieties of chocolate.

“Flavanols appear to be the substances in cocoa that are responsible for improving the bioavailability of nitric oxide from the cells that line the inner wall of blood vessels — vascular endothelial cells,” Dr Buijsse explained. “Nitric oxide is a gas that, once released, causes the smooth muscle cells of the blood vessels to relax and widen; this may contribute to lower blood pressure. Nitric oxide also improves platelet function, making the blood less sticky, and makes the vascular endothelium less attractive for white blood cells to attach and stick around.”

Does this mean it’s a good idea to grab a chocolate flavored candy bar and scarf it down every day? Not at all. Commercial candy is made with refined sugar, often contains artificial flavorings and other non-healthy ingredients, and is loaded with calories. Instead, consider adding small amounts of plain dark chocolate to your daily diet.

“Basic science has demonstrated quite convincingly that dark chocolate particularly, with a cocoa content of at least 70%, reduces oxidative stress and improves vascular and platelet function. However, before you rush to add dark chocolate to your diet, be aware that 100g of dark chocolate contains roughly 500 calories. As such, you may want to subtract an equivalent amount of calories, by cutting back on other foods, to avoid weight gain,” noted Frank Ruschitzka, Professor of Cardiology and Director of Heart Failure/Transplantation at the University Hospital Zurich, Switzerland, in a statement to the media.

The withdrawal of a popular painkiller from the market in the United Kingdom has led to a dramatic decrease in the number of suicides and accidental overdoses in that country, according to a study conducted by researchers from Oxford University’s Centre for Suicide Research and published in the British Medical Journal.

The drug in question is a combination of the narcotic painkiller dextropropoxyphene (in the opioid family) with the over-the-counter painkiller acetaminophen, also known as paracetamol or Tylenol. In the United Kingdom, the drug was marketed as co-proxamol, but it is also known as Darvon with APAP, Capadex, Di-Antalvic, Di-Gesic and Lentogesic.

In 2005, the British Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) decided to remove co-proxamol from the market after statistics emerged suggesting that the drug was particularly dangerous, causing between 300 and 400 self-poisoning deaths every year. Approximately 80 percent of these deaths were intentional suicides.

The agency instructed doctors to phase out use of the drug by 2007, and over that period prescriptions of co-proxamol fell 59 percent and deaths from the drug fell 62 percent. This translated into 295 fewer suicides and 54 fewer accidental overdoses from the drug. Significantly, there was no concurrent increase in suicides or accidental overdoses from other painkillers, even though use of those drugs increased correspondingly.

“This marked reduction in suicides and accidental poisonings involving co-proxamol during this period, with no evidence of an increase in deaths involving other analgesics, suggests the initiative has been effective,” lead researcher Keith Hawton said.

“Co-proxamol is extremely dangerous in overdose — only a small overdose can be fatal, and death can occur very rapidly — before medical attention can be sought,” an MHRA spokesperson said. “[In addition,] there is no robust evidence that co-proxamol offers any advantage over paracetamol or ibuprofen at normal doses.”

The FDA is currently considering whether to withdraw the drug from the U.S. market.

Dr. Dennis Harper nailed it regarding Hypothyroidism.  My mother has this disease and has struggle periodically with the symptoms Dr. Harper mentions in this article, including immense tiredness.  The only thing that seemed to help, before she started using Isagenix, is Armor Thyroid medication.

Hypothyroidism is generally associated with feelings of tiredness, constipation, temperature intolerance, poor mentation, weight gain, high blood pressure, rapid heart rate and or irregular periods.  These are just some of the symptoms.

Many patients with this condition are taking Synthroid or a generic of Synthroid.  Synthroid is just T4. The hypothalamus produces TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) to stimulate the thyroid into producing hormones. It’s regulated by the amount of T4 in the bloodstream. If the levels drop, then the TSH goes up. If it goes up, then it reduces the level of TSH.

Your thyroid produces four different hormones, T1, T2, T3 and T4. The one that the body needs for functioning well is T3. T4 only has about a third the activity of T3. Because of this a patient could be on Synthroid, but still be a low-thyroid individual. T4 must be converted to T3 for it to become metabolically active. This is done in the cells of the body and the liver. I personally recommend that anyone on thyroid medication read the book Hypothyroidism the Unsuspected Illness by Broda Barnes. This will give the patient a lot of information about his or her thyroid and what should be done.

I personally prescribe Armour thyroid (no generics) to my patients in divided doses in the AM and early PM. The reason for this is that it contains T3 and T4 and the T3 only lasts about three hours. If you are on thyroid medications, then you may wish to discuss options with your doctor relating to either replacing what you are on or adjust the medications accordingly. I have had several patients that required either a dosage adjustment or a change to get the full effect required.

When taking Isagenix products medication should be taken at least a half hour before using any products. Because those with hypothyroidism often benefit from extra protein and fiber, you may also consider mixing both IsaPro (as directed on the canister) and FiberPro (as directed on the canister) in your IsaLean Shake for best weight loss support.

Average Joe Accomplishes Above and Beyond Results With Isagenix

Mike is the “every man” – a self-proclaimed “average guy” who worked hard, lost focus on his fitness and ended up overweight.

Peaking at 256 pounds in 2006, Mike went to a Father’s Day gathering with his siblings and came to the realization that several of his family members were not only overweight, but were suffering from many health problems related to their unhealthy lifestyles. Mike knew he didn’t want to go down that road, so he decided to begin working out and trying to get himself back in shape. It was around that time that he first heard about Isagenix.

Just today I was walking through the trail of exhaust left from a golf cart making it’s way up the hill in front of me.  I kept thinking to myself, “when is this trail of exhaust going to end?”  The thought kept going through my mind “this cannot be good to keep breathing this, especially while my lungs are expanding for oxygen” due to the steep climb up the hill.

The point is that no matter where we go in our modern environment, there will ALWAYS be areas of toxicity that are almost impossible to avoid.  Here’s another example:  I was with my wife at our favorite restaurant here in Cabo San Lucas enjoying some good Mahi Mahi we’d just caught when the person at the table next to us pulled out a cigarette and was almost blowing it in our faces!  My wife started caughing because she is allergic to cigarette smoke, but this was something we couldn’t have avoided because we were right in the middle of dinner and it was so unexpected.

John Anderson Formulating Isagenix Products

Situated at the summit of an auspicious mountain is the glorious Yumbulagang palace, the oldest palace in Tibet, with more than 2,000 years of history as a spiritual and healing center for kings and Dalai Lamas. Nowadays the palace is still a sanctuary for Buddhist monks and travelers alike who hope to take in the sublime views of the landscape below. The surrounding valley is so pristine and beautiful that legend has it that drinking water from a perennial spring found there will cure any disease.

You could say the palace is an ultimate place of purification where one can drink in pure spring water, breathe in pure air and enjoy health-giving foods grown from the nutrient-rich earth in the region. If you happen to be a monk living there, then you probably don’t need nutritional cleansing.

As for the rest of us, we live in a completely different world. In our daily lives our bodies are under constant onslaught of stressors that come in the form of pollutants—via food, water and air—from a poor diet, and from the stress of busy schedules, conflict and strain at work, conflict in relationships, and even conflict in traffic. There’s little doubt that traditional nutritional thinking won’t cover our needs. We need extra help for helping us guard our bodies, help us to detoxify and to lose weight.

Now, there is plenty of reason to be leery of claims regarding safe, long-term weight loss and optimum health after being subjected to hundreds of “miracle” fad diets over the years. Whenever I hear about someone who has lost a lot of weight and has kept it off for longer than a few months with little effort, I’m the first to find the story just a little too hard to believe.

I know also that I receive a variety of e-mails questioning the need for nutritional cleansing. Most come from high skepticism because the simple fact is that “most diets don’t work.” But just as you may have discovered since trying nutritional cleansing, the whole-system approach that Isagenix provides does work, and it contains the right nutrients and botanicals given at the right time for maximum support to the body.

Ask a Tibetan monk about health and he’d tell you that you mustn’t lose faith in the body’s capability to produce miracles. You’ve probably noticed sugar alcohols before in chewing gum, candies, baked goods, ice cream and diet drinks. These products are also often labeled “sugar free”, “low in calories”, “diabetic-friendly”, and even “tooth-friendly”. Suspicious? We don’t blame you—when you see the words sugar and alcohol together, there’s plenty of reason to start asking questions. However, upon learning a little about these ingredients you’ll find they have unique benefits.

Sugar alcohol sounds worse than it is because chemists create names based on structures—it’s not the type of alcohol that makes you drunk! Sugar alcohols are so named because they are little carbon rings with OH (oxygen-hydrogen) groups on them, also called polyols. These polyols are naturally found in many plants and are easily recognized by the human body (in fact, human cells produce their own sugar alcohols such as sorbitol).

Fewer calories, greater flavor

The truth is that sugar alcohols, when used in correct amounts, can be safe, natural and healthy. They do provide sweetness and energy, but they have fewer calories than sugar (1-3 per gram versus 4 per gram). This results in a low impact on blood sugar and insulin levels, which is why sugar alcohols are often used in products intended for diabetics.

Some sugar alcohols can also be fermented by friendly probiotic bacteria that make up a healthy intestinal flora. A healthy intestinal flora helps support your immune system and can help improve digestion. In addition, sugar alcohols are seldom able to be metabolized by oral bacteria, which is why they’re “tooth-friendly”. They avoid promotion of tooth decay and cavities.

When used in foods, sugar alcohols can be especially useful. They provide bulk and texture that makes foods and candies more enjoyable to consumers. They enhance and deliver a lasting flavor of sweetness as well as provide a “cooling effect”. Particularly in baked goods, they help prevent browning when exposed to heat and also help those foods stay moist over time.

Maltitol

Not all sugar alcohols are the same. There are many with varying attributes. Maltitol, for example, acts in a different way than, say, xylitol. Maltitol is a disaccharide like sucrose (table sugar) and has almost the same level of sweetness and other properties. This makes it very useful for replacing table sugar while offering fewer calories and avoiding promotion of tooth decay.

When consumed, maltitol is broken down by enzymes to glucose and sorbitol. The glucose is easily absorbed, but the sorbitol is resistant to digestion. Because of its resistance to digestion, sorbitol works in similar fashion to prebiotic fiber, fermenting and feeding that helpful intestinal bacteria.

With maltitol, however, there is a concern about overconsumption, especially in people who are unused to sugar alcohols. Consuming an excess of 10g may cause bloating. And, in absence of soluble fiber, consumption of 20g or more can cause loose stool or diarrhea. You’d have the same laxative effect from eating too many fruits like plums, prunes, apples, pears and cherries. These fruits are all high in sorbitol. (Note: No Isagenix product contains sorbitol in nearly these high amounts.)

Xylitol and Erythritol

What about xylitol and erythritol? These sugar alcohols are not quite as sweet as sugar or maltitol. And they have a stronger cooling effect than any of the other sugar alcohols. You’d recognize their flavor from sugar-free chewing gum. Like maltitol and sorbitol, they offer fewer calories than sugar and don’t promote tooth decay.

Unlike their counterparts, however, xylitol and erythritol are unlikely to ferment and cause bloating or diarrhea. They are considered non-fermentable because  intestinal bacteria have difficulty digesting them. After consumption, most erythritol is absorbed easily into the bloodstream, while xylitol is absorbed more slowly.

Xylitol is notable because it’s found to be more effective than other sugar alcohols in reducing cavities. According to recent studies, primarily from Finland, xylitol may not only reduce potential cavities from forming, but even strengthen teeth. Its mechanism is thought to occur by attracting and “starving” cavity-producing bacteria. The Finnish were the first to extract xylitol from birch, but it’s found in many plants, fruits and vegetables, especially berries, plums and raspberries.

Erythritol is naturally found in grapes, melons and mushrooms, as well as in fermented foods like wine, beer and cheese. Because of its ultra-low impact on blood sugar, you’ll also find erythritol often paired with sugars to lessen its blood-sugar effects in foods, with other sugar alcohols, or with natural sweetening herbs such as stevia in natural sweetener packets.

It’s been a while since I’ve posted so this post may (depending on time) be packed.  Where do I start…let’s see….oh, well, I guess I should start by mentioning the painful and very expensive process of getting my Isagenix products shipped down to Mexico.   There are some packages that get stopped at customs and the only way to get you shipment the whole distance is to pay extra -like an arm and a leg.

Apparently, they don’t care about health products so they just let our order go through by regular mail.  However, it did take 20 days to arrive, but I am just grateful it is here.  Anna-Marie and I spent 2 month trying to figure out how we were going to get our product down here.  1 month of that was without any product.  Let me tell you that I experienced a huge decrease in my energy level, I gained about 10 Lbs, wasn’t sleeping as well at night and didn’t have nearly as much mental clarity(mainly from not taking the Ionix Supreme).

The Isalean shake is such a valuable meal replacement, full of vitamins, nutrients and undenatured organic whey protein from New Zealand.  When you go from taking 1-2 shakes per day, to taking none, you have to eat regular meals that you would normally replace with those shakes.  There’s nothing better than an Isalean shake for breakfast to start the day off on a great nutritional foundation.

So, our Isagenix finally arrived and we could immediately feel our energy level go up, cravings go down, and our bodies are balancing out(in Latin Isagenix means “body balance“).

Beach Volleyball and Isagenix

My wife and I love playing beach volleyball.  She played regular court volleyball in College and I am just one of those guys who started playing on the beach and love it!  We play about 5 times a week down here in Cabo at Sunset Beach.  Saturday Anna-Marie and I were invited to play in a tournament being held over at Pueblo Bonito’s Blanco resort.

At first, we were a little nervous as we saw how good our competition was.  The tournament was a 4 on 4 tournament so we had 2 other players with us -Jose and Miguel.  Both are very good and experienced.  The finals came down to our team and Carlos’ team(he is the head of all activities at Pueblo Bonito resorts).  It was obvious that their team was stacked carefully.

We lost the first game by 7 points.  The second game we won by 2 points, as well as the 3rd by more points to become the beach champions!  I felt a surge of energy that was definitely lacking when I wasn’t able to take my Isagenix Products.  Had my Isagenix not arrived, I am not sure I would have had the energy to hang with those guys.  My endurance level was much greater and, despite the lack of sleep I got the night before(woke up early to take my wife’s parents to the airport), I didn’t feel sluggish at all.

Let me first tell you that I am an avid watcher of the TV reality
show called “The Biggest Loser.” I get a little emotional nearly

goal they are pursuing.

Let me share with you an e-mail I received from my Uncle Ron just
a few days ago. Uncle Ron has been overweight nearly his entire adult
life and has struggled to keep the weight off ever since he began
gaining. He is about 65 years old. He wrote me recently to tell

I have some really exciting news for those who wish to expand their Isagenix business in Mexico! At August convention Isagenix leaders announced their plans to open the doors of Isagenix to the country of Mexico!  Let me tell you why I am enthused about this opportunity.  I am an American who has been building a residual income for the past couple years in Isagenix, but I recently moved to Cabo San Lucas Mexico and what a beautiful place this is!!

When is the Launch Date?

Unfortunately, I do not have a date yet, for the Isagenix launch in Mexico, but I do know that it will be soon, hopefully within the next couple months(Update: I just received word that it will be sometime in 2010, but no specific date yet).  I would love to see the people of Mexico take advantage of this wonderful opportunity that has the potential to bring many of them out of poverty.  I will be doing my part down here.  By the way, if you have any idea of a great way to ship stuff from the US to Mexico, please comment below and fill me in.  We just moved in over 2 weeks ago and I am still trying to figure out how to get my Isagenix products down here!  I have been told not to have the shipped directly down here because the will not give it to you unless you have paid them an arm and a leg for it!
